Dear Future Me

10th October 2016 marked this year’s “World Mental Health Day”. I haven’t posted last Wednesday seeing as I did a Sunday night special the week before and I promised myself I’ll only post every two weeks just so that it’s not interfering with my college work… For that reason I felt like I’m a little late for the theme of tonight’s post BUT  I realised that mental health is not important for only one day, it’s important every second of our lives, so here goes!

Inspired by Youtubers of the One Year Project, I thought I’d write a little something of my own!

(Only discovered their channel recently and they are Maynoothians so they deserve a little promo!)

Dear Future Me,

Life has been quite the rollercoaster so far. A lot happens in twenty-one years and honestly? You won’t remember half of it when you’re older. Remember all those times you said you can’t do it anymore? Well, guess what? You’re still doing the thing and you don’t even remember those times you struggled through. It’s mad isn’t it? How things that matter to you the most right now may not even matter in a year’s time or even a few months or weeks.

My hopes for you is that you’ll always love yourself and that you will keep loving yourself no matter what life throws at you. I want you to remember how great you felt when you started accepting your differences. I want you to always hold onto that feeling of being at peace with yourself and don’t you dare let anybody take that away from you.

Always remember that you’re the one who brought yourself to where you are. You are the reason your face glows with confidence and your charisma touches people. You’re the reason someone goes to bed at night feeling better than they did before. You’re the only one who can be you, and you’re the best you there will ever be.

Keep smiling. I know you can feel self-conscious about your smile sometimes but when you’re truly happy, that’s the least of your worries. Keep spreading your joy and keeping being the positive vibe everyone needs around them but most importantly, be the positivity that you need for yourself.

Some days you’re going to have to let go of people and that is never a selfish act. Always prioritise your happiness because when you’re alone with your thoughts at night, those people won’t matter, you do. So make sure that you’re going to bed with happy thoughts.

Don’t you dare ever have regrets. If you want something, go for it, even if you think you won’t get it. It’s better to have tried and lost, than never having given yourself the opportunity to find out.

Take it easy. When life throws bricks at you, build a castle and call yourself queen!! Stop taking life so seriously. Some days you’ll need mental health days and those days aren’t just for “sick” people. So take it when you need it. Life can be put on hold until you’re back on your feet.

I hope that you find people who love you for exactly who you are, your flaws and your imperfections. And I hope that you’ll always feel at ease in knowing your flaws and imperfections are what makes you the unique person you are, they are your strengths and not your weaknesses.

And finally, I hope that you always realise that the sun may set at the end of the day but it’ll never stops shinning. So if you’re ever feeling stuck in the dark, remember that “there’s light at the end of the tunnel”.

  1. This is really important ❤
More people need to talk about mental health to reduce the stigma and help us to feel less alone. I love that you're so young, but you can see the importance of this and that you have so many encouraging things to say to yourself!

    • I agree with you on that 100%. I feel like many people struggle to speak out because of the stigma and if we can eliminate that stigma, we would be helping an unbelievable amount of people!

Thank you for dropping by and thank you for your ever so kind feedback ❤
